St. Vincent - Actor
Judging from the artwork, this record looks precious. Like annoyingly, saccharinely precious. Two steps twee of Belle and Sebastian. Somehow, it’s not. Somehow, it’s really fucking good. It even rocks (in a refined, mannered, tasteful way). Looking at the cover makes me feel like I’m going to get a scolding from Mary Poppins; listening to it doesn’t. Nice. Actor - St....

Hudson Public House
Went here for dinner and drinks last night. Great beer selection, including Pliny the Elder. Also, Kwak Belgian which has to came in the most unique glass I’ve seen beer served in (see pic). Fries were cooked with orange rind which was better than it sounds. I had peppers stuffed with couscous and served with olives, tomato sauce, and parm. Amy had a v-burg made of beets and kale....

Baby Grandmothers
According to the internet: “Baby Grandmothers were a Short-lived Swedish Band, but One of the Most Prolific and Unique Psychedelic, Modal, Experimental Power-trios to Emerge Out of the Scandinavian Psychedelic Underground-scene in 1967.” A guy at Easy Street recommended them when we were talking about Lindstrom and Dungen. He says Dungen would not exist without Baby Grandmothers. I...

Nigeria 70 - this made my day
Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of 1970s Funky Lagos First off: this is really diverse and could only broadly be described as funk. If you’ve ever wondered what was beyond Fela, here it is: sinewy, narcotic, and all kinds of interesting. This comp actually made me look up airfare to Lagos today…. Chant To Mother Earth - Blo

The Botany of Desire - Michael Pollan
This is a super interesting book that discusses the coevolution of human beings and four plants: apples, tulips, cannabis, and potatoes. The basic hypothesis is that, in appealing to human desires (sweetness, beauty, intoxication, food), some plants have found a very effective evolutionary strategy. It makes you wonder who exactly is using whom. So, if you ever wanna feel like a glorified bee,...

First Listen: Fever Ray & Dan Deacon
Checked out two new albums today: Fever Ray’s Self Titled and Dan Deacon’s Bromst. First impressions: Both are (almost) wholly electronic. Both are unique. Both create their own world. These are the kind of records you can get inside (and stay a while if you like). Fever Ray: No one else really explores this kind of emotional territory. Austere, cold, stark, scary, and pretty. ...

Mint.com - this could be big...
So, I don’t really know where my money goes. Mostly to records, guitars, and beer, I guess. However, I’m hopeful that mint.com is going to change this for me. I spent a good portion of my morning getting setup (sorry KPMG), and so far it seems great. Basically, Mint aggregates all your financial accounts into one site. Sounds simple, but it’s awesome. And it’s free. ...

Anti-Fidelity Four Pack
Four flavors of lo/no-fi. Thought this whole scene is starting to feel a little stale (and I’m not sure how many more times p4k can dole out “Best New Music” for angsty kids w/4 tracks), I think these are catchy songs. Listen to ‘em and see one doesn’t stick. DROP-OUT - Times New Viking Rain On - Woods Sleeper Hold - No Age Come Saturday - The Pains of...

A History of the World in Six Glasses
Just finished reading this book. It’s by Tom Standage, Business Editor at The Economist. He traces the (surprisingly profound) impact six beverages have had on world history. The beverages are beer, wine, distilled spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola. Recommended if you ever wanted to know how beer became the impetus for human civilization, how coffee prompted the Enlightenment, or why...
